Volvo R-Design
From boxy utility wagon to super sedan: The transformation of Volvo into a desirable and sophisticated brand over the past decade or so has been remarkable. Nobody raises an eyebrow today when Volvo designers talk about making their cars “extrovert and emotional.”
The new R-design program will help Volvo owners express those feelings, adding a touch of individuality to their cars that’s still consistent with Volvo’s overall design philosophy.
Available for the first time in North America in late 2008 as a 2009 model, the R-design packages comprise a set of factory-fit styling features, including special badges set into the grille and steering wheel, unique skid plates and silver-matte mirror housing covers.
Compared to the model-specific styling packages that Volvo has offered in the past, which featured different combinations of material and badging, R-design provides a consistent and recognizable styling identity for sportier Volvos across the board.
The “R” stands for “refined,” and that’s a quality these features live up to. Volvo’s Detroit stand is festooned with R-design models, and in every instance their looks are subtle, smart and classy. It’s also inspired by the “R” sport-focused models that Volvo has produced.
The package will be available in the C30, S40 and V50 and XC90 ranges, and may effectively become an upscale trim level in some models. The XC90 R-design was receiving its world debut in Detroit, but the other models are currently on sale in some other markets.
The XC90 package includes 20-inch wheels and a new dual exhaust system. It will be available on the 3.2-liter V6 and V8 versions of Volvo’s crossover utility wagon.
Though pricing hasn’t yet been announced, Volvo Cars of North America Special Vehicles Product Strategy Manager Bill Buchka told MSN Autos that “customers will be pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the price will be. We can promise that it’s going to be good value for money.”
